ARACHNOCULTURE E-Zine
ARACHNOCULTURE debuted in 2005 in print format. It was self-published by Michael Jacobi and seven issues were released over the course of two years. The response was overwhelmingly positive. However, producing the magazine was both extremely cost-prohibitive and labor intensive. Budget constraints made professional printing impossible, yet the goal was from the beginning to produce a high-quality product both in terms of content and production values. Therefore, skimping on number of pages or using a low-quality printing method was out of the question, and each issue was painstakingly printed at great expense by color laser printer, collated by hand, and then bound and trimmed at Kinko's. It was then inserted in a plastic bag and sealed in envelope for mailing. Coupled with the costs of posting these heavy copies with a high percentages going overseas, the magazine lost money quickly and the project could not be continued.
ARACHNOCULTURE will now be released in an electronic version and prior readers of the print version with paid subscriptions will soon have access to the complete online magazine, including all past issues [pending individual article author approval] and future releases, at no charge. I am exploring how to offer those with outstanding issues on their print subscriptions some sort of premium content. A nominal fee for new readers may be implemented in the future, but this remains undertermined. I would prefer to eventually have all content on this site free to all readers and possibly supported by minimal advertising and donations.!
FREE ISSUE! Until I figure out the details of offering and administering this new online ARACHNOCULTURE E-Zine, I am first making publicly available an electronic version of the last issue of ARACHNOCULTURE that was released in print. This issue, ARACHNOCULTURE 2(3), dedicated to my 2006 tarantula expedition in Costa Rica, was only produced in a very limited run in the spring of 2007 before print production ceased, but is now just a mouse click away as ARACHNOCULTURE E-ZINE - ISSUE 7 featuring expanded photographs. Enjoy tales of my adventure with noted arachnohistorian and tarantula authority Andrew Smith and brothers Paul and Mark Carpenter and get a glimpse of Pura Vida.
