* The New World genera Psalmopoeus and Tapinauchenius were long placed in the subfamily Aviculariinae along with the other American arboreals. However, both of these arboreal genera lack urticaceous setae and have the evolutionary beginnings of stridulatory organs and are now considered New World representatives of the subfamily Selenocosmiinae.

† This genus is controversial and many experts believe it belongs in the family Barychelidae. However, it doesn't fit into any barychelid genera and is currently listed by Platnick as Theraphosidae until the debate is resolved.
