* Although the genus Poecilotheria is occasionally listed as belonging to its own subfamily (Poecilotheriinae), many experts consider it to be a part of Selenocosmiinae and I have chosen to list it as such here.

** Some theraphosid taxonomists believe that the genera Psalmopoeus and Tapinauchenius should be placed in the subfamily Selenocosmiinae because both of these arboreal genera lack urticaceous setae and have the evolutionary beginnings of stridulatory organs. However, others would argue that this is an example of parallel evolution; much the same as the familiar case of the New World Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus caninus) and its Old World counterpart, the Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis). I shall stay out of this debate—one I am unqualifed to argue intelligently—and list these under both subfamilial names.
